Celebrate De La Salle Week!

This week, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota celebrates De La Salle Week.  Dedicated to the life and work of St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, this week is an excellent time to learn more about the history of Saint Mary’s and the university’s Lasallian heritage. The Twin Cities Library has plenty of resources on both for your reading pleasure:

The Work is Yours: The life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle
This book discusses the life of Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, with chapters on each of the major stages of his life. It also includes a section on his enduring legacy – one that Saint Mary’s is proud to be a part of!

Touching the Hearts of Students: Characteristics of Lasallian schools
This seminal work on La Sallian schools provides an in-depth look at the educational philosophy that binds them together. In addition to a discussion of Jean-Baptiste de La Salle’s vision for education, this book offers ideas on how that vision can be adapted and presented for the modern day.

Brothers to One Another: the De La Salle Brothers behind the Iron Curtain
This fascinating history looks at the life and role of the La Sallian brothers in Romania, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia after the Second World War. Read this book if you are curious about the changing role of the brothers through time, or if you have any interest in life in Europe after World War II.

National Poetry Month

It's National Poetry Month, and TC Library is getting in on the action! Check out our April book display for an abundance of poetry.
Actually, in our whole print collection, I could only find eight books that feature and/or focus on poetry. (Not part of our academic offerings or collection development policy.) So - to make up for this outrageous hole in our collection, I wrote you a poem.

What does TC Library not have?
Books with poetry and rhyme!
Instead we own books on therapy
and management and crime.

So if you want a book of poems,
your routine from us must vary.
Order some through ILL,
or visit your public library.

We also have a bunch of poetry books in our eBook database. POETRY SLAM STARTS NOW!!!

Blind Date with a Book

February's book display is a little mysterious compared to past displays - you don't know what book you're going home with.  Inspired by the chocolate-laden holiday of Valentine's Day, come by the library and go on a blind date with a book!

How does it work? Librarians have chosen books from our collection that don't require subject expertise or a dictionary to get through - anyone can pick one up and enjoy it. Ha, that was totally an awesome pun I threw in there.

And we want you to let us know if you enjoyed your blind date! Each book comes with a special bookmark (to the right) - fill out the short "survey of your date" on the back of the bookmark when you return the book. (Click on bookmark to enlarge.) Let us know if the book was a stud or a dud.

We'll post the blind date results here, in this blog. (And learn if librarians have any future at matchmaking.)

Check back for updates throughout the month of February!

TRUE LOVE?!

Love in the Library

TC Library's February book display is all about love.

Being the original people that we are, we thought that love would be a good theme to go with this month. And actually, since we don't have a bunch of books on love, the theme is more like marriage, couples, getting what you want out of a marriage, and that sort of thing. The assumption is there is love involved.

However, not to discriminate, we also have a lovely selection of materials for people who hate Valentine's Day. Totally cool with us, yo, totally cool.

But, back to love--we'd love if you'd check out our book display this month.
