Roller Derby in the Library

We got new computer chairs in the library! They are beneficial for students' postures and for conducting chair races after hours. They also saved one librarian's back from having to carry weeded older editions of super-heavy nurse anesthesia texts. Come and have a seat.

Minnesota FoodShare

March is Minnesota FoodShare month and TC Library is excited to participate!

But actually, we participate year-round thanks to you and your generosity. You see, TC Library has a fun library-fine forgiveness program called Can Your Fine. This outreach program - the brainchild of Steve Swanson - is a library campaign that raises non-perishable food donations. Your donations go to the food shelf at Lutheran Social Services’ Center for Changing Lives, our next-door neighbors at 2400 Park Avenue.

How can you participate? Return an overdue book, donate three cans of food, and we will wipe the late fee off your library account. Can you be even more awesome? Return your book on time and donate non-perishable food anyway. It is Minnesota FoodShare month, after all!

Steve, Carrie, and Jane usually make the trek over to LSS about every other month with bags and boxes of non-perishable food items. Your donated food is distributed to Minnesotan families twice a month; over 150 households come to the Center for assistance. THANK YOU!!!!

Steve and Carrie gleefully dropping off some food items last summer. Hey Mother Nature. It's March 19th. Maybe you should start thinking about looking like this outside, instead of the white, wind-whipped tundra that is Minnesota today.

LibraryH3lp

TC Library has migrated to a new chat reference platform!

We are using LibraryH3lp now. You might notice a small difference visually to our chat feature, but the ease of use and anonymity are still the same. We switched platforms because our chat predecessor, Meebo, was purchased by Google a few months ago and Google chose to discontinue the service. Alas!

However, turns out this chat platform is even better--it works on PCs, Macs, tablets and most mobile devices.

JavaScript disabled or chat unavailable.

November's New Books

TC Library's current library display is all about new books!
Come by and check them out or, if you see one or seven in the list below that you'd like to get your hands on, message or email us and we will mail them to your home. If the item is checked out, sign into your account and place a hold on it.
Just in time for a long Thanksgiving read-a-thon whilst the rest of the world watches football. (Including one very football-fanaticy-librarian, who shan't be reading over the break. Nay, she shall be shouting GO DUCKS!!!)

EBSCO Criminal Justice Database

Attention law abiding citizens! We have a new database!

Starting today, you can use EBSCO Criminal Justice Abstracts with Full Text. This new database contains over 200 full text trade magazines and journals. Topics covered include criminology, corrections, investigations, forensic science, substance abuse, and probation/parole.

Twin Cities Librarians decided to review ProQuest and EBSCO's criminal justice databases. In our review, we found EBSCO's Criminal Justice Abstracts with Full Text database to be superior for several reasons:
  • EBSCO has more full-text titles than ProQuest.
  • EBSCO searches yield higher numbers of relevant results.
  • Everyone prefers EBSCO's interface (scientific fact).
Starting today, you have access to EBSCO's Criminal Justice database from our Databases A-Z page and the Security Management, Police Science, and Public Safety Administration subject guide. We have discontinued our subscription to ProQuest Criminal Justice Periodicals.

Revisions to Web site

TC Library has improved our Web site based on your constructive feedback and suggestions. Below is list outlining the main changes. Please contact us if you have any questions--and we would love additional comments and feedback!
  • Homepage - Article searching: The new default on the main page searching tabs allows you to search articles first. Choose a broad topic from the dropdown menu to see a page with database recommendations. If you know the database in which you'd like to search, select the link "Databases A to Z" under the dropdown menu.
    • You can also access links to Journal Finder and our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) article from here.
  • Homepage - Book & Video searching: No longer the default tab on the homepage. Click the Books & Videos tab to search for these items.
  • Homepage - top-of-page dropdown menus: Articles, Books & More leads you to pages specifically designed to help you find those different types of items.
  • Homepage - top-of-page dropdown menus: Research Help is the new, more intuitive name for the old tutorials tab.
  • Events: The old Events dropdown menu is now a Web page located under the About Us dropdown menu.
  • Articles page: Find it by mousing over Articles, Books & More. The tabs explained:
    • Find Article Databases: Lets you choose a broad topic from the dropdown menu to see a page with database recommendations.
    • Find a Specific Article: Lets you use Journal Finder.
    • Request an Article: Lets you go to our ILL form.
If you so desire, we also have a short video introduction to our Web site available here. While not as creative as a Lady Gaga video, we feel it still has a respectable amount of artistic merit.
